Pick a source with a visible color change
A bright coat, flowers or a colorful street gives the reveal a clear destination. The effect uses the colors already present in your media, so a source with very muted colors produces a subtler transition.
A still photo can become a short animated reveal. Video and Live Photo inputs also retain source motion while the scan passes through the scene.
Set up the scan
- Select Color Pixels in the home gallery and choose your media.
- Choose one of the four scan directions. Preview how the moving edge crosses the subject.
- Select a scan duration of 2, 3 or 5 seconds. For a short source clip, the scan is fitted to the available duration.
- Play or scrub the preview to inspect the grayscale beginning, the pixel band and the final color image.
- Choose video or Live Photo in export settings, then export and review playback in Photos.
Match duration and format to the result
For photo input, video output animates the chosen scan duration. For video input, the scan runs at the beginning, followed by the source colors for the rest of the clip.
Live Photo export uses up to three seconds, with the scan duration adjusted to fit. An image export captures one frame of the effect. To show the transition, choose a moving output and test playback after sharing.
Check a subtle or interrupted result
- If the change is hard to see, try a more colorful source and inspect the beginning and end of the preview.
- If playback is paused, use Play. Device Reduce Motion settings can affect automatic preview playback.
- If saving needs permission, review Photos access and the export result. Check the saved file before trying to share it.
- For a long video, inspect the opening scan as well as the remainder of the clip.
